An unforgettable experience.

Becoming a host family is a fantastic experience and is very rewarding. We get lovely praise from our students visiting Guernsey about the time spent with their host families.

It’s a great opportunity for your household to make new friends and work on their own language skills!

What host families say

“Having young children, we were a bit skeptical with hosting but we couldn’t have made a better decision. Laura was perfectly integrated in our family and the kids loved their Italian sister”.

What does a host family do?

A host family is a very special group of people who are able to welcome a young person into their home and allow the student the chance to enrich their lives while also enriching their own lives. Host families come in all shapes and sizes.

Our hosts act as a point of support for their guests, helping them to get settled, find their feet and navigate life in Guernsey. As a result, many of our students keep in touch with their hosts long after they depart. This is one of the many rewarding aspects of becoming a host family.

Our friendly team handles everything from dealing with the students through to your payments, so all you need to do is welcome your student with open arms when they arrive.

What does a host family provide?

Host families are asked to provide their student with:

  • A room in their home with a bed and closet space.
  • All meals – packed lunch for school days.
  • A safe and supportive environment.
  • A chance to become part of your family.

Host families are not responsible for paying any further costs for the student. Students arrive with their own spending money for activities, school costs, personal expenses, and travel, etc.

Students have their own insurance for medical and other potential costs.

All families will receive support including a Host Family handbook, Hosting information sheets, support from Accent and a 24/7 emergency number.

Who can be a host family?

Anyone in Guernsey can be a host family for an exchange student: Whether you are a couple with children, single or without children, we want to hear from you. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a house with a big garden, or whether you live in a flat in town. If you have space for a student (or two or more!) and would like to host, we would love to welcome you to our hosting family.

Host families do not need to speak a foreign language, we just ask that you speak English.

The exchange student must have their own bed, but may share a room with one of your children or another exchange student. Students can only share with people of the same sex.

Money! When can I expect to be paid?2022-03-11T13:30:21+00:00

We pay host families every Thursday. It doesn’t matter when they come or how long for; payments are always made on a Thursday. (for example, if your student comes on Sunday 1st July for one week, you will receive the whole £175 on Thursday 5th July).
Whilst payments are always made on a Thursday (unless something dire happens), we cannot guarantee the time in which the payment will be made, so please don’t expect the money to be sitting there at 12.01am… As much as we would love an automated system, all letters, payments, admin are done manually, by our fair fingers and as such, we make each payment individually as soon as we can, each Thursday via online banking.

How can I get in touch with you?2022-03-10T11:57:48+00:00

You can email anytime you wish, which we will look at and respond to during office hours. Similarly, you can call the office phone and have a chat, or pop in to see us Monday – Friday.
Please feel free to comment on our Facebook Host Family Group posts, we love to see everyone communicating in there!
In the event of an emergency or issue of absolute urgency, please call Anna Lisa or Holly whenever necessary. As a gentle plea though, please leave all other questions/concerns to office hours.
Whilst we do run the Facebook Group and will update as necessary at any time/day, we do request that hosts do not send messages to our personal Facebook accounts via messenger.

How can I get in touch with other host families?2022-03-10T11:58:08+00:00

We have a private Facebook group, which we encourage all families to join – there will be no advertising or hassle in here, just a way for us to update the host families with important/relevant information and changes (e.g. bbq cancellation or delays), and for hosts to connect without having to share personal information to initial strangers.
