Be a host for International Students with Accent Guernsey this summer

Have you ever considered being a Host for a foreign student? Or perhaps a number of foreign students? Do you have a home with an extra room and feel you could accommodate a student for a week or more during the summer?

Hosting means sharing your home, hospitality and culture with a foreign student from the age of 11 years of any nationality for a certain length of time. Being a host is very rewarding and equally enjoyable learning about the students’ lives and cultures and building lifelong friendships. Many of our students come back to Guernsey year after year to visit or stay with their host families.

Who can host a foreign student?

There is no ‘typical’ host family, we accept those that are married, single, young or retired, with or without kids of your own. Everyone is welcome to apply, we are looking for host families that have the desire to learn, teach and enjoy their hosting experience.

If you can offer a nice, comfortable and safe place for our students to live and thrive, offer 3 healthy meals a day, a parent driver for our students to get to school and get around, time and enthusiasm to make their stay an enjoyable one, then join the Accent family.

What’s involved?

Our students will require a breakfast, a packed lunch for the weekdays and an evening meal. Students will spend Monday to Friday at Accent Language School, St Peter Port, having English lessons in the morning followed by lots of fun and exciting activities during the afternoon. We ask that they are dropped off at 8:45am and picked up at 5pm with weekends spent with their host families and meeting up with their friends.

Benefits of being a host

Our students are coming to Guernsey to learn English so they will be encouraged to converse with their host families to practice their conversational English so many of our host families enjoy the experience of coaching and helping students with their English. You may be able to learn some of their language in return.

We have a wide range of nationalities coming to Guernsey on a language holiday needing accommodation all year round, but especially in the summer.

Choose your availability

Once you become a registered as a host with Accent Language School you can let us know your availability for having students, there is no obligation to have a student for the whole duration of the summer, just let us know what weeks suit you.

We are flexible to your needs.

No experience needed

If you have never been a host for foreign students before that’s not a problem, we will give you guidance and support and put you in touch with some of our experienced host members for additional advice.

Make lasting friendships

We guarantee you will make lasting friendships. Many of our host families maintain contact and continue to write to their students long after they have left the home and many accept invitations to stay with them in their homes. A great way to explore other cultures.

Match making

We try to match our students with the right families. Adult students are more independent so older students suit some host families while others enjoy having the younger students, especially if they have children of their own.

Support is on hand

There may be times when you struggle to communicate or your student doesn’t come home on time or a situation arises that you feel unsure about. We are on hand and can be contacted at any time for help and support.
